Blood and Sand
The Blood and Sand is one of those classics that can go sideways fast, but when the balance is right, it’s a truly compelling drink. This is my go-to build. A quality blended malt Scotch lays down a gentle, honeyed foundation without any peat getting in the way, allowing the rich, spiced notes of a proper Vermouth di Torino to connect with the other components. Speaking of which, the deep, dark fruit of Cherry Heering is essential; it's a world away from sugary pretenders and is one of those foundational cocktail ingredients every home bar should have. Fresh orange juice brings it all into focus. Assembling a collection of versatile craft spirits is what we do at the House of Bitter Bear, and I, Anders Erickson, selected these specific bottles because they harmonize perfectly. They don't just coexist in the shaker—they create a surprisingly savory, complex, and endlessly drinkable cocktail.
