Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Westward American Single Malt Whiskey was established in 2004 by Christian Krogstad, a former brewer and winemaker, with Thomas Mooney joining later. It's recognized as a trailblazer in the American Single Malt category, deeply intertwined with the Pacific Northwest's rich craft brewing culture. Westward is known for its "grain-to-glass" philosophy, starting by brewing an American pale ale from scratch using locally sourced barley and ale yeast, then double pot-distilling and aging in new, charred American oak barrels. While a relatively new brand compared to some historic distilleries, Westward quickly became a leader and the largest independent distiller of American Single Malt by 2015.
