While Nikka itself was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the "Father of Japanese Whisky," this particular expression is a more recent innovation, developed around 2013 as part of Nikka's ongoing experimentation. What makes it noteworthy is that it's made from 100% malted barley, yet distilled in traditional Coffey stills – a type of continuous still usually reserved for grain whisky production.
