While the 8 Year Old Reserve itself was crafted by Master Blender Joy Spence to commemorate the distillery's 250th anniversary (initially in 2000, then reintroduced in 2020 after a period as a no-age-statement Reserve Blend), the brand is steeped in a long history of rum-making. Appleton Estate is known for its commitment to "estate-distilled" rums, meaning they manage everything from sugarcane cultivation on their 11,000-acre estate to distillation and ageing, using limestone-filtered water from a natural spring on the property and a proprietary yeast strain. A noteworthy aspect is their use of both pot and column stills, and the tropical ageing process, which matures rum significantly faster than in cooler climates.
